Claw, bezel, pavé, channel, tension and flush settings compared.
Typical UK second-hand price
Setting type rarely changes resale price much; condition does
Setting types
- Claw / prong — 4 or 6 claws; most light, needs checking for wear.
- Bezel / rub-over — metal rim around the stone; most secure.
- Pavé and micro-pavé — tiny stones beaded into the band; stones can come loose.
- Channel — stones set between two metal walls, good for wedding bands.
- Tension — stone held by pressure; dramatic but hard to resize.
- Flush / gypsy — stone sits level with the band; very hard-wearing.
Before you buy
- Gently shake the ring near your ear — loose stones may rattle.
- Have any high-value piece checked by an independent valuer or jeweller before paying. JewelleryTrader does not authenticate items.
