Platinum and palladium
950 platinum vs 18ct white gold, patina, weight, and palladium.
Typical UK second-hand price
Platinum rings often resell close to 18ct gold equivalents
Platinum
Platinum is naturally white, hypoallergenic and dense — about 60% heavier than 18ct gold. It doesn't wear away when scratched; metal is displaced, giving a soft 'patina'. Hallmarked 950 (or 900/999).
Palladium
Palladium is a lighter platinum-group metal, hallmarked 500, 950 or 999. Must be hallmarked over 1g.
Before you buy
- Look for 950 or PT950 and the platinum orb (pentagon) mark on UK pieces.
- Have any high-value piece checked by an independent valuer or jeweller before paying. JewelleryTrader does not authenticate items.
